There are no teams
Ok but, like really Annette, what the hell are you talking about? Trust me, I can hear the collective groans from coaches across the land. But before you jump down my throat, hear me out.
Storytime...
It's senior year at Purdue University.
I'm sitting with the rest of the starters watching practice. Players who hadn't played much in the game before are battling back and forth across the field in front of us.
It's typical Indiana. Grey. Cold. Boring.
Courtney is slouched on the bench wondering out loud if she should go to the party that night. Kelly is nursing her ankle (is it broken or just a bad sprain?) Moppert is telling Mary a joke. All of us oblivious to the bench players, fighting for their lives in front of us, hoping to be seen in any capacity.
We talk about teams like they represent this collective with shared goals and shared values, but in that moment I realized something different. We didn't share much of anything, let alone the same experience.
You are in this alone.
It's not good. It's not bad. It just is. And the sooner you realize this, the sooner you take your power back.
This is a solo journey. No one is going to do the work for you. No one is concerned about your playing time, but you. No one is here to hold you up.
Wonderful. Now you can do it yourself.
Dismantling the idea of team sports won't break the team; as a matter of fact, it will only make it stronger. And guess who also becomes stronger? That's right. You.
Thanks for the support! I'm glad you're here. Check out this week's schedule below. Talk soon my friend!
