Calming the Mind

A guide to meditation

So much of your meditation practice will be about finding stillness. Within that stillness you can hear better, you can think better, you can clear some of the fog from your mind. The trick is to be open to the process. Maybe you do 5 mins at a time to start. There is no one way to do this. You just have to start.

Purpose of Meditation

Meditation, as Pema Chödrön explains, teaches us two key skills: to come back and to stay. When we meditate, our minds often wander to various thoughts and distractions. To come back means gently returning our focus to the present moment whenever we notice our mind has drifted. This helps us be more aware of what's happening right now, rather than getting lost in our thoughts.

The second skill is to stay, which involves being present with whatever comes up during meditation, whether it's discomfort, boredom, or difficult emotions. The goal of meditation isn't to feel good, but to learn to be with what is. When we can stay with our current experience, we can find the most useful way forward. This practice helps us navigate life with greater clarity and understanding.
